Revising US History Through WASP-Tinted Glasses

Remember the good old days, when America had true leaders, guiding our nation in the right direction? What went wrong? And why were we led astray?

Writing in The Wall Street Journal last month, Joseph Epstein proposed a theory: The U.S. used to be ruled by white, Anglo-Saxon Protestants, or WASPs. Their mantra was “trust, honor and character.” Scandal and incompetence were absent. Gravitas and social responsibility were the mores of the establishment and thereby defined our nation.

The logic goes something like this: Because WASPs were leading at the time, they must have be the source of such virtue. And if we had leaders more like them today, we might not be stuck in our present morass.

What made the WASP era truly great were the WASPs’ opponents — the labor unions that demanded fair wages; the civil rights leaders who were consistently imprisoned by the WASP establishment they protested against; the anti-war activists, some of whom were killed for their service; and the economic thinkers who argued that government was not a great evil and that redistribution was both a moral and economic good. http://america.aljazeera.com/opinions/2014/1/revising-us-historythroughwasptintedglasses.html

A Feud That Lasted A Lifetime: Ariel Sharon vs. Yasser Arafat

Ariel Sharon and Yasser Arafat. It’s hard to speak of one and not mention the other. They were inextricably linked by the Israel-Palestinian conflict, symbolizing a feud so enduring it’s now outlasted two of its most prominent protagonists. http://www.npr.org/blogs/parallels/2014/01/11/261390545/a-feud-that-lasted-a-lifetime-ariel-sharon-vs-yasser-arafat

Sharon’s and Israel’s histories were inseparable… from the kibbutz-settlements thru the Partition and all the wars that followed. Sharon’s hatred of the Palestinian Arabs was lifelong. All due sympathies & condolences to his family, but Sharon had more than his share of blood on his hands…

    Inside Colorado’s Green Rush –

“The smell of marijuana hangs heavy over the entire neighborhood” – Doesn’t this just sound like nirvana ?

Since Jan. 1, the stores have seen heavy demand, much of which is from out-of-state customers, says Medicine Man marijuana store co-founder Andy Williams, 45. At Medicine Man, buyers say they appreciate the security and reliability that comes from buying pot from a store, even though they have to pay taxes.

At the store, an armed guard checks IDs and waves buyers to the counter, where “bud tenders” offer guidance on what kind of high the buyer is looking for and recommend different strains for their pain-relieving, appetite-simulating or euphoric properties. Behind another set of locked doors, the store’s approximately 50 employees busily tend to thousands of pot plants — fertilizing, harvesting, drying, weighing and packaging.

The smell of marijuana hangs heavy over the entire neighborhood, and dozens of prepackaged baggies of pot hang from hooks in the storefront, allowing customers to select from about 30 different strains. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/01/11/drug-deals-go-out-in-the-open-in-denver/4415827/
