    Apr 24, 1863:
Union issues conduct code for soldiers
The Union army issues General Orders No. 100, which provided a code of conduct for Federal soldiers and officers when dealing with Confederate prisoners and civilians. The code was borrowed by many European nations, and its influence can be seen on the Geneva Convention.

The orders were the brainchild of Francis Lieber, a Prussian immigrant whose three sons had served during the Civil War. One son was mortally wounded while fighting for the Confederacy at the Battle of Williamsburg, Virginia, in 1862. Lieber’s other two sons fought for the Union.

JINDO, South Korea — With hopes of finding more survivors of the South Korean ferry sinking all but gone, some families, as well as the nation, began bidding farewell on Wednesday to the students and other victims whose bodies have been recovered. And in an unusual gesture, North Korea sent its condolences.

Conservatives begin backing away after Cliven Bundy’s remarks disparaging ‘the Negro’

Republican politicians began backtracking on their support of Nevada anti-government rancher Cliven Bundy after the New York Times caught Bundy making racially-inflammatory remarks blaming African-Americans for willingly submiting to dependency on federal assistance.

“They abort their young children, they put their young men in jail, because they never learned how to pick cotton,” Bundy was quoted as saying to a group of supporters last Saturday. “And I’ve often wondered, are they better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things, or are they better off under government subsidy? They didn’t get no more freedom. They got less freedom.”

“’’I’ve often wondered, are they better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things.”

    “What is Kuan Yin?

Kuan Yin (also spelled Guan Yin, Kwan Yin) is the bodhisattva of compassion venerated by East Asian Buddhists. Commonly known as the Goddess of Mercy, Kuan Yin is also revered by Chinese Taoists as an Immortal. The name Kuan Yin is short for Kuan Shih Yin (Guan Shi Yin) which means “Observing the Sounds of the World”.

In Japanese, Kuan Yin is called Kannon or more formally Kanzeon; the spelling Kwannon, resulting from an obsolete system of romanization, is sometimes seen. In Korean, she is called Kwan-um or Kwan-se-um. In Vietnamese, she is called Quan Âm or Quan Thế Âm Bồ Tát.

Kuan Yin is the Chinese name for the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara. However, folk traditions in China and other East Asian countries have added many distinctive characteristics and legends. Most notably, while Avalokitesvara can be depicted as either male or female, Kuan Yin is usually depicted as a woman, whereas Avalokitesvara in other countries is usually depicted as a man.”

I took my coffee in the gardens with Gina. The fog shows off every spider web in the gardens. Our ligustrum and jasmine are both beginning to flower, and have lovely scents. Our porch has 40 ft of jasmine. Beau wants a batch of pork and shrimp subgum chow mein…so chopping veggies and dragging out my wok is in my near future. I found my wok at Walmart for 5 bucks, and it’s great no stick surface. MySeed Co that has those Persian carpet zinnias, also has seeds for Pak Choi cabbages
after I get my check, I’m ordering seeds

  16. boyinboycott says:

a small transplant form our chinese indigo is beginning to flower today, I planted it in a two tiered pot earlier this spring

It looks like a miature pink wisteria that grows about 3 ft high.
Speaking of wisteria, the old wisteria tree I cut the branches off, just won’t give up the ghost, I removed about 50 sprouts growing on the old stumps.I left the trunk of the wisteria, it anchors my bamboo trellis.

  19. Ingrid Lee says:

Good morning, everybody. I made it through my first night in my windowless little room in Buenos Aires. Now comes the really challenging part though: Taking a shower! The toilet/bathroom/sink is so small, I don’t look forward to the experience. I already got my courage up and went to the toilet-shower wrapped in my towel – but it’s occupied. There are quite a few people living in these little windowless rooms, so using the toilet or shower is a waiting game. The reason all the rooms (or most) are without window is because this is a really narrow house, with most the rooms on the side that’s flush with the neighboring building. On the other side, next to the stairs, the house is open, so there’s light there; and there’s a skylight in the toilet.
I took my shower, what a relief! But it isn’t a real shower, the water comes in one stream the way it does out of a normal faucet. But it was warm! Luckily, I’m not very sensitive, so the fact that it’s not very clean at all didn’t face me.
But I have Cable TV, over 70 channels, even RAI Italia (why that’s so, no idea)! They have a lot of stuff with Spanish subtitles (Bonanza for example), and also Spanish-language stations with English subtitles. I love subtitles, they make it so easy to get into a language.
Well, that’s the state of affairs in BA so far.
    Have a good day!

  20. What; everyone is asleep on this net neutrality thing, where is the president?
