We all wear them. On Halloween; we don the scariest facades, a hairy creature of the wild, a monster-the piecemeal creation of a mad scientist, a fanged blood sucking count (ok these are real we call them Republicans) a green witch, mindless zombies also known as the America voters or limpid apparitions from the great beyond.
Some men and (to a lesser degree) women go the entire lives wearing masks, not to scare people but to hide the inner monster blending in is their lure. You see them all the time–the perfect couple but what lies beneath the masks? people have a bad habit of ONLY seeing what they want to see. We recognize the look behind the lies, “well I ran into a door knob” Yeah, because door knobs are placed at fucking eye level-we ignore the telltale signs flashing before us; it’s like standing inches in front of a neon sign and not being able to read the words. Maybe when we do that, we too are wearing a mask; called indifference.
Quietly, a few weeks ago President Obama ( I wear no mask when I talk about what I think about him) made the proclamation making October — National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2014/09/30/presidential-proclamation-national-domestic-violence-awareness-month-201 To bring domestic violence to the forefront for an entire month is to unmask those that hide, that hurt, that kill. Become aware and don’t be fooled by masks, people’s lives are at stake.
