The internet in the simplest term is a global network of computers using various protocols to share information. But what is the world-wide web? Simply put it’s an information system that allows you to access linked content. In between there’s a vast multilayered; complex system that allows us to experience this medium in different ways. In this digitalized, pixellated universe you can find the gamut of what makes society:
In it, reflected are our hopes as a species our greatest achievements, our monumental failures, we see in this binary universe, our nobler aspirations and the darkest side of our nature ……and lots of pictures of cats, to my surprise even more so than albino midget porn IKR?
The internet’s origin is in the military. The need or our government to amass and classify information, that they don’t want the citizens to know about, gave rise to the internet– ironically it’s the internet that has become the tool people use to expose the government’s violations against the citizens. Had the internet remained secretive one of the most significant event in human communication, the dawn of the digital era would never happened.
To me the internet, beyond the geekery, the politics, is the interconnected shared experience that transcends our physical bodies; it allows each of us to be more than ourselves, to take in all of humanity, the very universe at the click of a mouse–how can that ontological experience be regulated and sold piecemeal to those that can afford it?
This is not the first time Americans have lost something because of greed and ignorance; while I know there’s no real comparison between the decimation of the Firsts Americans and the internet–a parallel rings true to me, it’s a great sense of loss. We have already lost everything the great Chief Seattle spoke of 161 years ago when the US Government offered to buy his people ancestral land
“Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect.”Chief Seattle
Now a different web is in danger and much like in Chief Seattle’s time it’s the Great Chief in Washington who has set in motion events that maybe irreparable. Internet Neutrality should be protected it should remain as we have it today, the ” COMMON CARRIER” compromise we are being brainwashed into believing is the answer will only open up back doors for telecoms to slap price tag to premium services ( which already exist in terms of broadband) and to isolate the internet–it will be a mirror of our society, social strata, the haves vs the have-nots.
