“You can observe a lot by watching.”–Yogi Berra.
In a sport of giants, Lawrence Peter “Yogi” Berra, stood not as an icon but a humble man of the people. He symbolized the true heart of the sport that goes beyond the multi-million dollar contracts or the self-grandizing of players that demand people pay for an autographed ball.
His yogisms are part of the American lexicon and he was immortalized in cartoon form as the picnic basket thief Yogi bear. He was all that is good in a sport that has forgotten that “the national” sport is about accessibility for all Americans–Yogi is gone but his legacy will live on and won’t be over.
