From Democracy for America:
“Something incredible happened in Milwaukee on Tuesday — something that might just be the beginning of the massive political shift we need here in Wisconsin.
DFA-endorsed progressive challenger Chris Larson delivered a shocking Election Day blow to billionaire incumbent Chris Abele, beating him by more than 700 votes in the primary for Milwaukee County Executive.
Insiders and press thought Chris Larson was a long shot at best. After Larson announced, Abele decided to loan millions of dollars from his personal fortune to his campaign — an insane level of self-funding that resulted in Larson being outspent 20 to 1.
But the people of Milwaukee County didn’t fall for it. They exceeded all turnout expectations on Tuesday — despite having to navigate the newly-implemented Voter ID law — in order to show Abele and his pro-corporate friends that the people of Wisconsin are ready for a change.
Chris Larson’s impressive showing in the primary election should give every Wisconsin progressive something to celebrate.
But the fight is NOT over yet. The general election is on April 5. [… donation request edited out]
Chris Abele has continually put the desires of wealthy special interests ahead of the needs of the people he was elected to represent. For years, Abele has conspired with Tea Party hero Scott Walker and the Republican legislature in order to undermine public schools, family wages, and public parks.
As a State Senator, Larson was one of the 14 lawmakers who left the state in order to take a stand against Walker’s union-busting budget proposals. Now, he wants to bring that fighting spirit to a county that needs and deserves a champion for working families.
Abele is not going to let go of his powerful position without a fight. On Wednesday, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter Daniel Bice wrote that insiders expect Abele to blow as much as $5 million of his own money on the general election, and that we should “look for Abele to ditch his feel-good TV ads and lit pieces in favor of hit jobs.”
If we’re going to take back Milwaukee County — and send a message to all Wisconsin politicians who favor wealthy donors and corporations over their working constituents — we need to have Chris Larson’s back right now. “
