Democracy Springs Eternal?

“He who in given cases consents to obey his fellows with servility, and who submits his will, and even his thoughts, to their control, how can he pretend that he wishes to be free?”
― Alexis de Tocqueville, Democracy in America

When the government becomes part of the problem CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE  becomes the tool the people are obliged to use in order to be heard. This is the era of rampant corruption, a system that has corporations at the top of the social strata, the greatest danger to democracy today is the ” PEOPLE’S”passivity that allows the collusion between the government and corporations to remain unchecked.

Our Demands – Democracy Spring
http://www.democracyspring.org/demands

THERE ARE REAL AND IMMEDIATE SOLUTIONS – SUPPORTED BY DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS ALIKE – THAT WOULD REDUCE THE CORRUPTION OF BIG IN POLITICS AND PROTECT FREE AND FAIR ELECTIONS FOR ALL.

Democracy Spring demands that Congress pass four bills that have already been introduced and confirm a nominee to SCOTUS who will ensure an end to legalized political corruption and support equal voting rights for all: one person, one vote.

HERE ARE OUR DEMANDS:

PASS THE VOTING RIGHTS ADVANCEMENT ACT (H.R. 2867, S. 1659)

http://vrafortoday.org/current-legislation/

This would restore the protections against voting discrimination that were struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court in its Shelby County v. Holder decision, and make additional, critical updates to the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

PASS THE VOTER EMPOWERMENT ACT (H.R. 12)

https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/114/hr12/summary

This would modernize voter registration, prevent deceptive practices that keep people from the ballot box and ensure equal access to voting for all.

PASS THE DEMOCRACY FOR ALL AMENDMENT (H.J.RES. 22, S.J.RES. 5)

http://freespeechforpeople.org/the-amendment/democracy-for-all-amendment/

This would overturn U.S. Supreme Court decisions like Citizens United and allow elected representatives to set common sense limits on money in elections.

PASS THE GOVERNMENT BY THE PEOPLE & FAIR ELECTIONS NOW ACTS (H.R. 20 AND S. 1538)

http://www.demos.org/publication/government-people-act

This would encourage and amplify small contributions from everyday Americans by matching small donors with limited public funds.

CONFIRM A SUPREME COURT NOMINEE WHO WILL ENSURE POLITICAL EQUALITY BY VOTING TO PROTECT VOTING RIGHTS AND END THE CORRUPTION OF BIG MONEY IN POLITICS.

There was a bit of controversy when Dr. Paul Song said that we need to kick out the “corporate Democratic whores” and replace them with “Bernie-crats.” the crowd did not take it to be a bit sexists but I see that the INTERNET opportunists have made it an issue, saw it on a few sites already.

He actually was a good speaker.

As much as I may complain about Obama, at least he’s not tromping through another Vietnam. There will be troops on the ground in the middle-east if Hillary is elected. She’ll give ISIS exactly what they want: Armageddon. I base this solely on her past hawkishness, no matter what she feigns now. Dick Cheney could have given this speech.

I’m sure the republican alternative would do this too. Frankly, I don’t see much of a difference.

    • Jack says:

I agree. She will not make the mistake of looking soft on anything she’ll want to crack skulls.

“There are two things which a democratic people will always find very difficult – to begin a war and to end it.”~ Alexis de Tocqueville

      • Darth says:

Great quote. I think she’d go out of her way to crack skulls, just to prove the point that she’s not to be trifled with. That’s the hawk theory on foreign policy in a nutshell; that if you bloody someone’s nose in front of everyone, no one else will mess with you. This, of course, means that you become the bully. That’s the thing they never seem to get IMO. Therein lies the danger.

Hundreds of protesters arrested at Capitol building

Hundreds of US activists from the Democracy Spring group have been arrested after protesting outside the Capitol building in Washington DC.

They were demonstrating for campaign finance reform.

I wish there was a way to do the same thing they are doing in Washington to the Media. I had a convo with a guy from a good media source, won’t mention it in case it ends up on youtube.

Basically I asked who he was with, he said xxxx and I said then I can talk to you because I have no respect for those sons of bitches, I pointed to the media box, CBS and others. He acknowledged, uncomfortably, that they are not the best.

Cable News Not Covering Government Corruption Protests in Washington, D.C. (Video) – Truthdig

The Democracy Spring movement is growing. But you wouldn’t know it by watching mainstream media.

After more than 400 people were arrested in front of Congress on Monday for protesting U.S. campaign finance laws, cable television news channels like MSNBC and Fox News dedicated fewer than 30 seconds of coverage to the dissent, The Intercept reports. CNN did not provide any daytime broadcast coverage.

On social media, where the action got over 136,000 tweets, it’s a different story.

Cenk Uygur, host of “The Young Turks” and one of the people arrested Monday, has a theory on why traditional media did not cover the protest.

“Part of the problem is … we did it right, and the cops thanked us for being so peaceful and doing civil disobedience right,” he explained. “The problem was it didn’t bleed … If it doesn’t bleed, it doesn’t lead. That is an implicit way the media encourages violence.”

Bernie Sanders rallies 27,000 in Manhattan – The Washington Post

NEW YORK — It was one of the largest rallies in a campaign full of them, as what Sen. Bernie Sanders’s campaign claimed to be more than 27,000 people crowded into Washington Square Park to hear the candidate speak. The presidential candidate, joined by his wife Jane, seemed taken by emotion when he saw the size of the gathering.

“Jane and I left New York City when we were kids – it is great to be back,” said Sanders.

The venue, with the candidate framed under the iconic 124-year-old marble arch, resonated with the history of American protest. It had been packed before for gay rights rallies, anti-war marches, and protests after the death of a black Staten Island man named Eric Garner at the hands of the NYPD.

Hillary Clinton rakes in Verizon cash while Bernie Sanders supports company’s striking workers – Salon.com

In some ways, it would hard for Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton to be more different.

Hillary Clinton, a Wall Street-backed multimillionaire, served for six years on the board of directors of Walmart, the world’s largest company based on sales. She remained silent at a time when the mega-corporation was viciously cracking down on workers’ attempts to unionize.
Bernie Sanders, on the other hand, has been unflinching in his support of the labor movement. Sanders has spoken passionately in support of striking Verizon workers on multiple occasions.

The Hillary Clinton campaign, meanwhile, has received tens of thousands of dollars from Verizon executives and lobbyists.

That’s not all. For a May 2013 speech, the corporation paid Clinton a whopping $225,000 honorarium, according to her tax records.

Verizon has also given between $100,000 and $250,000 to the Clinton Foundation, which investigative journalist Ken Silverstein has referred to as a “so-called charitable enterprise [that] has served as a vehicle to launder money and to enrich family friends.”

Moreover, the Clinton Foundation has partnered directly with Verizon, which is notorious for its vehement opposition to unions. The corporation is a partner in the Clinton Health Matters Initiative, and said it is “proud to partner with the Clinton Foundation.”

Journalist Zaid Jilani reported in AlterNet in October, when Sanders spoke in support of a Verizon strike, that the corporation’s executives and lobbyists had poured money into Clinton’s campaign or PACs.

Three Verizon vice presidents each donated $2,700 to Hillary for America. They were joined by a senior vice president and another vice president, who gave an additional $1,000.

A former Hillary Clinton operative who now lobbies for Verizon donated $2,700 as well, along with another Verizon lobbyist who pitched in $1,000.

While Clinton’s campaign is receiving Verizon cash, Sanders is delivering powerful impromptu speeches physically on Verizon workers’ picket lines.

Good grief – talk about spin… Brought to you by the heirs of BrightFart, et al.

“Following their apparently delusional belief in the “success” of Tuesday night’s violent protests, anti-Trump groups are plotting “Democracy Spring” threatening “drama in Washington” with the “largest civil disobedience action of the century.” The operation, backed by Soros-funded MoveOn.org among others, warns on its website that “We will demand that Congress listen to the People and take immediate action to save our democracy. And we won’t leave until they do – or until they send thousands of us to jail.” ”

How can anyone claim to be “THE” force behind the Democracy Spring when the organization clearly states it is a bipartisan organization meant to represent the people, all people and not just the 1%. There are a lot of lies and propaganda being dished out solely to keep “we the people” disempowered. And to discredit any movement to give power back to the people.

      • Classical Gas says:

Just laugh, wave – those jerks are seriously out to lunch. Trumpazoids and nut-buckets, one and all. And “violent” protests?!? LOLZ!! The comments are so deranged I’m surprised they haven’t eaten their keyboards.

    • waverly says:

Hiya Classy, please check out the interview I posted with Cenk Uygur from TheYoungTurks speaking with three of Bernie Sandars supporters “Rosario Dawson, Linda Sarsour & Nomiki Konst”. The interview is a couple posts below this one, same page. They talk about the Democracy Spring. It is a peaceful movement meant to bring attention to the removal of the corrupting influence of big money and returning power to the people not just the top 1%.

  12. waverly says:

These women have been active in politics for some time and they all have come to the same conclusion. What we are doing now is not working and cannot continue. They are all now supporting the message of Bernie Sanders and are currently appearing with him at his campaign rallies. Their voices represent the change needed to our political system.

They discuss among other things the Democracy Spring movement where Cenk describes his arrest, and Rosario says she will be joining them on Friday. They also discuss propaganda and how distorted information is purposely fed to the public to mislead them.

We need to speak out now to protect net neutrality. If H.R. 2666 passes, the FCC would have no way to punish corporations when they treat us unfairly, jack up prices, or hit us with unscrupulous surcharges.

Bastards. Yesterday the @ the Bernie rally they lay into Verizon hard.
