The BULLSHIT is plain to see and artist Alex Gardega is full of it! The Wall St. Bull as it stands is not OFFENSIVE, ( yet! just look at how the confederate flag is reviled today) when it was created it represented growing financial markets optimism of the 80s. Since, history shows that the era was one of unbridled greed and corruption and today the Wall St. charging bull represents the duality beautifully.
A few months back the bronze sculpture of the “Fearless Girl” appeared in time for international women’s day, just as intended. Immediately the talk became of some rogue hero illegally making a bold statement against Donald Trump’s misogyny and the Wall St. male dominated culture. Well people were half right. The “Fearless girl” was commissioned by investment firm to represent their commitment to gender-diversity and the leadership role of women in the finial sector, the company’s stock ticker is SHE. WOW! Remember when people fought to have women in the workforce? Now they are considered just as vicious social sharks, hey that’s progress isn’t it? Nevertheless; people hijack narratives to suit their views, in either case BOTH sculptures have artistic value and add to a broader social discussion.
Today, a rather (seriously, I see it as such not trying to be political in my disdain) unremarkable, oblong copper turd was placed adjacent to the FG. The artist claims it’s a dog urinating on her leg–why? Because he feels ‘yada, yada the corporations, elitists, wall St, burn, stab–hey! I could get in on some of that, but he states, “It has nothing to do with feminism, and it is disrespect to the artist that made the bull. That bull had integrity,” the artist explained, adding, “I decided to build this dog and make it crappy to downgrade the statue, exactly how the girl is a downgrade on the bull.” Disrespects the Bull? This from a guy who made a band of hot sauce called “Bernie in hell” dedicated to Bernie Madoff?
This guy is just another hack looking for attention, nothing wrong in that when you’re an unknown artist but to cowardly tack it on to others work is mediocrity at its best. He has the attention he wanted but I think he miscalculated what that would mean because that little girl he picked-on comes with a hell of a lot of friends.
